Randolph Stanley Hewton (1888–1960) was born in Quebec and studied under William Brymner in Montréal before training at the Académie Julian in Paris, where he met A.Y. Jackson in 1912 — a friendship that would deeply influence his style. He was invited to exhibit with the Group of Seven in 1920 and helped found the Beaver Hall Group the same year. He served as director of the Art Association of Montreal School of Art in the early 1920s, was a founding member of the Canadian Group of Painters, and was elected to the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts in 1934. His works are held in the National Gallery of Canada, the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec, and the Art Gallery of Ontario.
